ZHE JIANG A&F UNIVERSITY IN BRIEF
HISTORY AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Established in 1958, Zhejiang A&F University (ZAFU), a crucial member along the Science and Innovation Corridor of West Hangzhou, is a provincial-level key university jointly built by the provincial government and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Over the past 60 years, the university has grown to cover three campuses (East Lake, Yijin and Zhuji), with a total area of 213 hectares. As a multidisciplinary university, it offers eight discipline classes, with strengths in agriculture, forestry, and the biological environment. Currently, the disciplines of Engineering, Plant & Animal Science, and Agricultural Science rank in the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators; Forestry is in the top 20% and Landscape in the top 30% on the National Disciplines Evaluation. ZAFU is now ranked in the National Top 200 Universities according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
The university has 16 colleges (departments) and one independent college. The university has around 1,900 teaching and administrative staff, among which there are one academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, five adjunct academicians, and over 700 professors and senior researchers.
CORE RESEARCH STRENGTHS
During past five years, ZAFU has been the only university in Zhejiang Province to receive 8 national scientific research awards, 10 first prizes for Provincial Science and Technology Awards, and 2 first prizes for the Provincial Award of Outstanding Results in Human Society Scientific Research. ZAFU researchers have published 5,595 articles (including articles published in nature and 1,371 indexed) and obtained 1,307 patents. The staff has also received more than 259 national research projects, with total research funds worth 970 million RMB.
ZAFU has contributed to the larger community by undertaking technology promotion and social services in more than 50 regions all over China. It has jointly completed more than 3,000 projects with local governments and enterprises, which have produced more than 20 billion RMB in economic value, and helped more than 200,000 farmers in poverty reduction.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
ZAFU has been dedicated to the idea of open education, and has actively carried out international exchanges and cooperation. It has signed cooperative agreements with more than 80 universities and research institutes in 23 countries (regions), including the U.K., the United States, Canada, Finland, Japan, and Australia. Strategic partnerships have been established with more than 10 Top 100 Universities around the world including the University of British Columbia, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Helsinki. ZAFU has also jointly established a Confucius Institute with the University of Novi Sad in Serbia representing its growing international influence.
