The College of Science grew out of the Department of Foundation, established in 1981, which was mainly responsible for the teaching of basic courses including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, Computer Science and Sports. The Department of Foundation was renamed the Department of Information Engineering and Basic Science in October 1999, and had five teaching and research offices for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Sports, as well as two experimental centers for computer and physical chemistry testing. In June 2001, the school revoked the Department of Information Engineering and Basic Science, and returned to the Department of Foundation. English, Computer and Sports were phased out and became independent departments. In April 2003, the school retracted the Department of Foundation and established the College of Science due to the adjustment and development of the discipline and specialty.

The college now has four disciplines (departments): Applied Mathematics, Applied Chemistry, the Department of Statistics and the Department of Physics. Among them, the Applied Mathematics discipline and Applied Chemistry discipline are the school-level cultivation disciplines. There is one master program of Biophysics, two institutes of Photoelectrons and Applied Chemistry; there is the key laboratory of Chemical Utilization of Zhejiang Forestry, the Physics Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, school-level Physicochemical Undergraduate Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and a Mathematics laboratory. It opened three undergraduate specialties: Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, and Applied Chemistry, with 647 full-time students at this school. There are 82 faculty members, including six professors, 23 associate professors, 33 teachers with doctoral degree and 10 doctoral students. Two teachers have been rated as outstanding teachers of universities in Zhejiang Province, five teachers are listed in Zhejiang’s "151 Talent Engineering" rankings, one teacher was selected to be the “young and middle-aged” discipline leader of universities in Zhejiang Province, one teacher was listed in the training plan of young scientists of Zhejiang province, one teacher was listed in the provincial "Education Engineering" rankings, one teacher was selected to be the school “youth tip-top talent”; one teacher is the school’s “outstanding teaching” recipient, and three teachers are the school’s “up-and-coming teachers”.

The college has been insistent on making talent training as the center focus, making the improvement of education quality as the core, providing strong support for the graduate school exam of all students on the first classroom of basic courses, and has a main standard of testing the quality of teaching at the college. On the second and third classroom of the mathematical contest in modeling—physical and chemistry experimental technique competition—it focuses on cultivating students' innovation and entrepreneurship ability, promoting the all-round development of students, and adapting to social needs as the measuring standard. In the field of professional construction, it looks for the effective binding points of the interaction and penetration and development of science and engineering, etc., and deepens and solidifies the characteristics through the combination of science and engineering. Taking the Communication and Tarena cooperation as an opportunity, it builds the practical training innovation platform with special features and explores the training mechanism of senior application-oriented talents in the cooperation between school and enterprise. In the last three years, it has won a second prize of provincial-level teaching achievements, and a first prize and two second prizes of school-level teaching achievements. It has hosted two provincial teaching reform projects and over 50 school-level teaching and construction projects; It has published more than 20 teaching reform papers and published more than 10 textbooks; students have won more than 200 national and provincial awards in various disciplines competitions, and they’ve have published 22 papers as the first author, including 12 SCI papers. Students have received more than 24 patents.

The college connects the school’s "1030" strategy in scientific research, adjusts the discipline’s development direction to biometrics, biophysics, biomathematics, and biomass function materials; strengthens the combination or coalition of characteristic advantaged discipline of the school and developing the supporting disciplines of the preponderant discipline groups in the school’s discipline group system. Through the combination of the "three rural issues", dislocation development, and differentiation development with peer colleges, the depth of agriculture-related knowledge is constantly advanced, and “farming” research characteristics and advantages of non-agricultural weak basic disciplines are formed. With the declaration of the master programs realized as a breakthrough point, and the academic team construction as the basis, all internal resources of the school are integrated, the features and advantages of the College of Foundation are pursued, and the synergistic effect and comprehensive competitiveness of the discipline are improved. In the past three years, the cumulative scientific research funds have been over RMB 10 million, and over 100 scientific research subjects have been secured, including 11 national natural science fund projects and 16 provincial natural science fund and general projects of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology. It has obtained more than 10 scientific research achievements and published more than 100 papers included in four retrieval systems, including SCI and EI.

Looking forward to the future, the college will strengthen the refinement and development of the spiritual culture of the college, attach importance to the harmony and unity of scientific spirit and humanistic spirit, compact the college culture and discipline culture, focus on talent training, take the improvement of the quality of education as the core, moderately develop the scale of undergraduate education, actively develop graduate student education, employ the school’s "1030" strategy, further adjust the research direction of disciplines, strengthen team construction, optimize the allocation of resources, pay attention to the combination of industry-university-research cooperation, innovate the system and its mechanisms, follow the path of "solid foundation, the pursuit of characteristics; dislocation development, and integration development”, and make great efforts to build the college into a teaching and research college with great comprehensive strength.
